Just knowing how many people in a population died or gave birth may not really give you a good idea of what is going on in the community. For example, if the average age for people in a community was 65, you would expect more people to die than in a community with the same number of people but where the average age was only 25. By using mathematical formulas, you can look at rates, or age-adjusted rates, instead of raw numbers. This allows you to compare your population to other groups more accurately.

Fertility rates are also called birth rates. The teen fertility rate has been consistenly higher for Hillsdale than for Michigan's white population during the last decade.

In the 2002 school survey, teens were asked if it was against their moral values to have sex as a teenager. 56% of 8th grade students said it was, compared to 34% of 10th graders.
