Prairie Springs is a pottery studio located in the gently rolling hills and farm land near Hillsdale, Michigan. It is owned and operated by Nancy and John Gertig.

Nancy Gertig received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and teaching certificate from the University of Michigan in 1969. In addition, she attended pottery classes in Colorado, California and Texas. She taught art both privately and in the public schools for 15 years.

Nancy is responsible for designing, throwing and decorating all pottery. The majority of the pieces are thrown on the potter's wheel. Early Americana, floral and animal designs are hand brushed using lead-free glazes and stains. Each piece is kiln-fired to stoneware which fuses the designs into the off-white base glaze. This technique is similar to one used to produce the tin-glased ware made in Europe during the 18th and 19th centuries.

John Gertig attended UCLA and worked for many years in the aviation industry as an aircraft engineer and pilot.

John is responsible for all glaze mixing, and base glazing of the wares. He is in charge of all advertising, shipping and equipment maintenance for the studio and the shows.

Our pottery is food-safe, microwave, dishwasher and oven safe. Since the pottery is hand-crafted there will be slight variations in color, size and decorations, making each piece unique.

All pottery is made at Prarie Springs and is sold by us at arts and crafts shows in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana and Texas.

Collectable Stoneware Santas are unique to Prarie Springs. Each year two new Santas are sculpted: one by Nancy and one by John. These are sold at our shows and through mail order.

The Prairie Springs gallery is open Monday through Thursday and on weekends when we are at home. Please call in advance, (517) 523-2229. You may also call for price lists, order forms and show schedules.
