Population: 969 (2000 Census)

Meeting Dates - 2nd Monday at 7:00 p.m. - Township Hall - 9596 Homer Road. Telephone - 517-542-3950, fax number the same.

Andrew Bushnell discovered Litchfield in 1833. He left the property and came back later to build a cabin next to Jerry Cevela's home on Marshall St. In 1834 a mail route was established between Jonesville and Marshall, running through Litchfield. Postage was .25 cents for letters going 150 miles or more. Parker Dresser built their first home and established the first tavern. A store and a soap factory were also built.

Taxes must be received in the office by 2-14-12. Post mark and/or check date is not acceptable to avoid late payment. Receipts are mailed only on request.
Dog licenses are $10 for spayed & $15 for an unaltered dog. Proof of rabies vacination required. Licenses & taxes may be paid by mail: PO Box 434, Litchfield, MI 49252. Vacination certificate & licenses will be returned by mail.
Board of Review Dates: March 2012 - dates to be announced later.

Fire Department

The Litchfield Fire Department is the result of a joint effort of the City of Litchfield & Litchfield Township. It services both areas. It also provides contract services to portions of Butler & Scipio Townships. It is operated under the Litchfield Fire Board which is composed of members from the City of Litchfield. Litchfield Township, Scipio Township, Butler Township & a Member at Large. It is a volunter department of approximately 25 members. In August of 2011 the department raised its ISO rating from a 7 to a 5. This accomplishment is a reflection of the fine job the Litchfield Fire Department is doing.
