The County Clerk is the clerk of the circuit court, custodian of the circuit court seal, clerk of the board of commissioners, clerk of the board of canvassers, clerk of the gun board, clerk and member of the plat board, chief election officer of the county, member of the county election commission, registrar of statistics, registrar of assumed names (business names other than corporations), recorder of military discharges, member of the apportionment committee, and one of the financial officers of the county - including accounts payable and payroll. The County Clerk also appoints his/her chief deputy, and other deputy clerks in his/her office.
The position is elected on a partisan ballot every four years (same years as President). Should a vacancy occur between elections, it is filled by appointment by the circuit judge of the county.
