Local Cooperation

Hillsdale Township is a member of the Headwaters

Recreation Authority along with Fayette Township,

the Village of Jonesville, and the City of Hillsdale.

The goal of the HRA is to maintain and develop

non-motorized trails in the combined area. We also

recently entered into a Joint Recreation Plan with

the City. The plan was a joint effort between the

City and Township planning commissions and

provides guidelines to independently and jointly

develop recreation opportunities.

Hillsdale Rural Fire Department

Memberships

Please see the enclosed Hillsdale Rural Fire

Department Brochure concerning annual

memberships. The Township Board has committed

itself financially to supporting the Fire Department

to keep it local. HRFD is not funded by a separate

millage and is only one of two private Fire

Departments in the state. The Township contracts

for their service. An increase in memberships will

be beneficial for residents individually, as well as

the financial well-being of the Township and the

Fire Department. Keeping the Department local

keeps insurance rates low and provides faster

response times. At his last meeting, outgoing

supervisor Bill Vincent, recognized township

residents Jack McLain and Jack Teneyck for their

effort in restructuring the Fire Department Board

and creating a financially sound operation. Please

consider supporting the Rural Fire Department with

a $45 annual fee and if you have questions call the

number in the brochure.

Sand Lake Valley Cemetery

Hillsdale Township’s second cemetery, located

near the corner of Bunn and Hallet roads, was

acquired 9 years ago and the development of the

site has been steadily evolving. Many lots have

been sold in the start up section and a few burials

have taken place. Recent improvements include a

rework of the landscaping at the entrance and

adding water lines to the developed area. The

water will aid further expansion of the grass area

and will facilitate more landscaping next spring.

Sand Lake Valley is using the “ribbon” concept for

monuments and markers. The long reinforced

concrete slabs also provide a place for flowers and

help with the trimming and appearance. Township

residents and others are encouraged to drive

through and see the progress. Those interested in

purchasing lots should contact Sexton Joe Sanford

at 517-398-1610 for further information.
