In Michigan, the County Road Commission is in charge of all public streets and roads in the county that are not in a city or village. The Commission consists of three commissioners, serving six year staggered terms. In Hillsdale County, the road commissioners are elected at large (there are no districts); and also acts as the Hillsdale County Parks Commission. The Road Commission may appoint an engineer/manager and other staff to manage the roads.

Most funding for roads come from state transportation funds, such as gasoline and diesel taxes, and from township cost sharing.

Hillsdale County has 370 miles of primary roads, and 833 miles of local roads, for a combined 1203 miles of county roads. The Hillsdale County Road Commission also maintains 93 miles of state highways under contract with MDOT.

Currently, the three commissioners are Mr. William Watkins, Mr. Bob Godfrey and Mr. Michael Parney.

The engineer/manager is Mr. Stanley Clingerman.

Operations Superintendent is Sam Gier.

Office Manager / Clerk is Janet Aemisegger.
