In Michigan, the County Road Commission is in charge of all public streets and roads in the county that are not in a city or village. The Commission consists of three commissioners, serving six year staggered terms. In Hillsdale County, the road commissioners are elected at large (there are no districts); and also acts as the Hillsdale County Parks Commission. Currently pictured from left to right, the three commissioners are Mr. William Watkins, Mr. Bob Godfrey and Mr. Michael Parney. Most funding for roads come from state transportation funds, such as gasoline and diesel taxes, license plate registration fees, and from township cost sharing. Hillsdale County has 370 miles of primary roads, and 831 miles of local roads, for a combined 1201 miles of county roads. The Hillsdale County Road Commission also maintains 93 miles of state highways under contract with MDOT. Take a look at the Road Commission photo gallery!
